You do not buy a GPS antenna every day and that is why it is good to inform yourself about the different types and their characteristics. Special antennas are available for special equipment, so your choice can sometimes be more limited. Always check which equipment you want to use the antenna with. View the equipment itself and its features or check the packaging or manual that you received when you purchased the equipment. There are also various options for attaching a GPS antenna and models are available in different designs and price ranges.

The basic characteristics of a GPS antenna

Before you purchase an antenna, start with the goal you want to achieve with the antenna. If you have a certain type of transponder or tracking terminal, it often also requires a specific antenna. Unfortunately, other types may not be suitable. You can then only search for your ideal antenna within the existing series of your current transponder or tracking terminal. There are often various options within a series. The extent of the specifications that the antenna meets usually determines the price range from which you can make a selection.

An antenna for multiple purposes

Not only can you choose a pure GPS antenna, but combinations are also possible with LTE antennas and a WiFi antenna. A combination antenna can benefit you. There are also antennas that are specially designed to absorb shocks and vibrations. This means that your antenna has a longer lifespan in a vibration or shock-sensitive environment than antennas that have not been designed and tested for this. So before you buy an antenna, make a good analysis of where you are going to attach the antenna, how you are going to use it and how resistant the antenna should be to all kinds of external influences.

Other characteristics of antennas

Once you have decided what kind of antenna you need, you can still look at how to attach it. Some antennas can be attached in several ways, such as with an adhesive strip, with a magnet or with screws. You can then choose the confirmation method yourself or even change it afterwards. Other antennas must be permanently attached to a flat surface or to a pole using screws. In addition to the different mounting methods, you may also wonder what weather influences your antenna should be able to withstand. There are antennas that can withstand extremely high or extremely low temperatures, antennas that can be used both indoors and outdoors and antennas that are moisture and water resistant. And then of course you also have to think about the antenna cable. Furthermore, every GPS antenna requires an investment on your part. Therefore, always look at the budget you have to spend and the warranty offered on the antenna. Of course you don't assume that you need that warranty, but on some antennas you get a 3-year warranty and that is worth more than a shorter warranty period.
